Some cities stay with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can leave them for years, sometimes even decades, and somehow they never really leave you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, that city is London<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I first visited more than 30 years ago. London was one of those places that stayed in my heart long after I had returned home. I remembered the atmosphere, the streets, the red buses, the Underground and the feeling of being in a huge city where there was always something new around the corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty years later, I came back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this time, I had a different reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted to show my sons<\/strong> the London I had loved for so many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that turned out to be a very different kind of trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn’t want to show them just the postcards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you visit London for the first time with teenagers, there is an obvious temptation to make a list of the famous sights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big Ben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tower Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buckingham Palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Westminster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tick them off, take some photos and move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, I wanted my sons to see the iconic London. It was their first visit, after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I wanted something more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted them to understand why I had loved this city in the first place<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted to show them the London beyond the postcards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The historic London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The modern London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The London of museums and architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The London of the Thames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The London you experience while travelling on the Tube or sitting upstairs on a London bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the London you discover simply by walking through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is how our first London trip with teenagers<\/strong> began to take shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four days to discover as much of London as possible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Four days are not enough to see everything London has to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they are enough to get your first taste of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I tried to create a trip that would give my sons a little bit of everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We visited the iconic landmarks<\/strong> that you simply shouldn’t miss on your first trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we also went to Greenwich<\/strong>, explored museums and discovered parts of modern London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted them to see how different London’s neighbourhoods can feel from one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One moment you can be surrounded by centuries of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A short Tube journey later, you are standing among glass skyscrapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then, suddenly, you are beside the Thames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That contrast is one of the things I love most about London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted them to see modern London too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the places I particularly wanted to show them was Canary Wharf<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It isn’t necessarily the first place people think of when planning a first trip to London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that was part of the reason I wanted to include it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted my sons to see that London isn’t just Buckingham Palace and Big Ben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canary Wharf shows another side of the city \u2013 modern, ambitious and constantly changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former docklands have been transformed into a skyline of glass and steel, while the old waterways are still part of the landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a completely different London from the one you see around Westminster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I wanted them to see both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there was the Thames Barrier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another place I deliberately added to our itinerary was the Thames Barrier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It might not appear on every standard London sightseeing list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I found it fascinating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I wanted to show my sons not only the beautiful and historic parts of London, but also how the city actually works<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Thames Barrier is an impressive piece of engineering designed to help protect London from flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the visit became even more interesting because we didn’t simply arrive, take a photo and leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We walked along the riverside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Thames Path<\/strong> gives you the chance to experience this part of London at a slower pace \u2013 with the river, docks, industrial landscapes and the barrier itself all around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was exactly the kind of experience I was looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something they might not have discovered if we had simply followed a traditional list of London’s most famous sights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted them to experience London, not just visit it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That became the main idea behind our trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn’t want four days of rushing from attraction to attraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted my sons to experience London<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we used the Tube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We took buses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We walked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We crossed different parts of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We visited museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We looked at old buildings and new skyscrapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We stood beside the Thames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We explored Greenwich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yes, we visited the famous landmarks too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because a first trip to London should include them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I wanted the trip to be more than a collection of photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted them to come home with a feeling for the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

London after 30 years<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For me, returning to London after three decades was emotional in a way I hadn’t quite expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some things had changed enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some places were almost unrecognisable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And some things still felt wonderfully familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this time I wasn’t simply comparing today’s London with the London I remembered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was seeing it through my sons‘ eyes too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that made me notice things I might otherwise have walked past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The modern skyline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The engineering of the Thames Barrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contrast between old and new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The way the Tube connects completely different parts of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The energy of the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sheer scale of London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a strange way, I was discovering London all over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real test came afterwards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is one thing you never quite know when you plan a family trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will everyone actually enjoy it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I knew why I<\/strong> loved London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I wasn’t sure whether my teenage sons would feel the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I was particularly happy when, after the trip, they didn’t say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

„We’ve seen London now.“<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

„We want to go back.“<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that was probably the biggest compliment my itinerary could have received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why I created this London itinerary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the reason our London itinerary for teenagers<\/strong> is not simply a list of attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It grew out of a very personal idea:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted to show my sons the London I had loved for more than 30 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted to give them the classic first-time London experience, but also show them the places that reveal another side of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iconic landmarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greenwich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canary Wharf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Thames Barrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A walk along the Thames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

London buses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And all the little moments in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because for me, a successful first trip to London wasn’t about seeing absolutely everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was about giving them a reason to want to come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it seems we managed that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
