Our family itinerary full of history, views, walks and one trip to the iconic Forth Bridge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinburgh was the start of our Scottish adventure.<\/strong> We are only just preparing for a longer trip around Scotland, but as we wanted to enjoy Edinburgh at a more relaxed pace, we decided to head off on a four-day city break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinburgh is precisely the sort of city where you can walk for days and still feel like you've missed something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The historic centre, a castle towering over the city, narrow streets, green parks, views from the hills and modern architecture. And just when you feel you have explored Edinburgh inside out, you can hop on a train and be by the sea in no time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four days ultimately proved enough for our initial introduction. But definitely not for getting to know the whole of Edinburgh.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is our Edinburgh as we got to know it over four days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We didn't manage to do anything else on the first evening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We arrived in the evening, it was already pitch black everywhere, and my roaming didn't work at all. Suddenly I had to start functioning just like in the days before Google Maps, timetables, and everything you can now find on the internet with a single click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We went outside and luckily buses were standing right in front of the airport. I walked along a few stops and started to figure out which of them would take us closest to our accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a good thing I know English. Even if understanding a Scot is not quite the same as understanding a Brit.<\/strong> \ud83d\ude01<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He won in the end Airlink 100 City Centre Express<\/strong>, which brought us to the Edinburgh West End area in about 30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We checked in and, as it was already late, there was no major exploring of Edinburgh that evening. We bought some things for breakfast and went to get some rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, we didn't see Edinburgh on the first evening. It was plunged into darkness \u2013 and actually, we didn't mind at all.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The morning Edinburgh started winning us over<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the morning we set off on foot towards Edinburgh Castle. The streets were almost empty, with not a soul around. After about fifteen minutes of walking, we passed through a typical Edinburgh street with shops, a school and old tenement buildings, and suddenly before us opened up Grassmarket<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The square struck me with its atmosphere, even though at the time I had no idea of its history. Only later did I find out that in the Middle Ages it used to be a noisy market full of livestock and merchants, but also a grim place of public executions, which gave it a dark reputation. It was right here that the incredible story of a woman who survived her own hanging and returned to life also took place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, however, the Grassmarket is completely different. Colourful houses, restaurants, pubs, and above all Edinburgh Castle, which towers directly above the square<\/strong>, create a place that I think you will fall in love with upon your very first visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And my husband surprised me too. He didn't really want to go to Edinburgh at first \u2013 \u201eEveryone goes to Dubai, after all.\u201c<\/strong> argued. \ud83d\ude01<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But right here, something changed. He looked around for a moment and then said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eIt is lovely here.\u201c<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I think Edinburgh gained another fan at that moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the atmosphere of Scotland was beautifully enhanced by a small souvenir shop \u2013 Scottish kilts, bagpipes, scarves and other things that immediately remind you that you are truly in Scotland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinburgh Castle: a first encounter with history<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Edinburgh Castle towers over the city and on a first visit you simply cannot miss it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the Grassmarket we climbed up to the castle, and along the way we realised that the photographs are a bit deceiving. It's really uphill.<\/strong> \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the castle itself did not disappoint us. We spent about two hours here, gradually walking through the individual courtyards and exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I especially enjoyed the stories connected with Scottish history and the views of the city. I also bought an audio guide. If you speak English, I definitely recommend it. At individual spots you can listen to interesting facts connected with the castle and the audio guide stays in your mobile app even after the visit. So you can play some of the stories back home and transport yourself back to Edinburgh for a little while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our son found his own attraction, though \u2013 robotic lawnmower<\/strong>, which bravely managed the steep slope around the castle. \ud83d\ude01<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that is precisely what is lovely about travelling with children. You think you are going for the history, and the child takes away a completely different experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admission to Edinburgh Castle<\/a> I would definitely buy it in advance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you need to switch off for a bit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After the historic centre, we headed to the park Princes Street Gardens<\/strong>. Cht\u011bli jsme si hrad prohl\u00e9dnout i z \u00fapln\u011b jin\u00e9ho \u00fahlu a j\u00e1 jsem m\u011bla je\u0161t\u011b jeden d\u016fvod \u2013 cht\u011bla jsem zaj\u00edt do knihkupectv\u00ed Waterstones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cestou do parku jsme pro\u0161li kolem star\u00fdch n\u00e1hrobk\u016f, kter\u00e9 cel\u00e9mu m\u00edstu dod\u00e1vaj\u00ed trochu tajemnou atmosf\u00e9ru. Je a\u017e zvl\u00e1\u0161tn\u00ed, jak se tady ru\u0161n\u00e9 m\u011bsto b\u011bhem p\u00e1r krok\u016f zm\u011bn\u00ed v klidn\u00e9 m\u00edsto p\u0159\u00edmo pod hradem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do\u0161li jsme a\u017e k Ross Fountain<\/strong>, odkud je kr\u00e1sn\u00fd v\u00fdhled na Edinburgh Castle. Tahle zdobn\u00e1 litinov\u00e1 ka\u0161na m\u00e1 tak\u00e9 zaj\u00edmav\u00fd p\u0159\u00edb\u011bh. V roce 1862 ji na Velk\u00e9 v\u00fdstav\u011b v Lond\u00fdn\u011b zaujal edinbursk\u00fd v\u00fdrobce zbran\u00ed Daniel Ross<\/strong>, kter\u00fd ji koupil a daroval m\u011bstu. Do Edinburghu dorazila rozlo\u017een\u00e1 na 122 kus\u016f a v Princes Street Gardens byla instalov\u00e1na v roce 1872.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Odtud jsme vy\u0161li na Princes Street a zam\u00ed\u0159ili do Waterstones<\/strong>. M\u00e1m toti\u017e slabost pro knihkupectv\u00ed a z cest si \u010dasto voz\u00edm knihu jako vzpom\u00ednku. Ani tentokr\u00e1t jsem neodolala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pak u\u017e jsme za\u010dali hledat n\u011bco k j\u00eddlu. Cht\u011bli jsme si vyzkou\u0161et atmosf\u00e9ru typick\u00e9 britsk\u00e9 hosp\u016fdky, a tak jsme zam\u00ed\u0159ili do Rose Street. M\u011bli jsme \u0161t\u011bst\u00ed \u2013 v The Rose & Crown<\/strong> zrovna prob\u00edhala Happy Hour, tak\u017ee jsme se dob\u0159e najedli a je\u0161t\u011b za p\u0159\u00edjemnou cenu. Po dopoledni pln\u00e9m historie a chozen\u00ed jsme tak na chv\u00edli zpomalili. Jen\u017ee n\u00e1\u0161 den v Edinburghu je\u0161t\u011b zdaleka nekon\u010dil. Odpoledne jsme se rozhodli na chv\u00edli opustit centrum a vydat se vlakem sm\u011brem k mo\u0159i.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jedn\u00edm z m\u00fdch obl\u00edben\u00fdch moment\u016f bylo rozhodnut\u00ed na chv\u00edli Edinburgh opustit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Z Haymarket jsme sedli na vlak, abychom okusili i trochu m\u00edstn\u00edho \u017eivota, a vystoupili ve stanici Dalmeny. Po vystoupen\u00ed z vlaku jsme se vydali p\u011b\u0161ky sm\u011brem k m\u011bste\u010dku South Queensferry. Chv\u00edli jsme \u0161li cestou, kterou bych asi nejl\u00e9pe popsala jako \u201ebu\u0161\u201c, a pak se p\u0159ed n\u00e1mi najednou objevil Forth Bridge<\/strong> \u2013 obrovsk\u00fd \u010derven\u00fd \u017eelezni\u010dn\u00ed most p\u0159es Firth of Forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Byla to \u00fapln\u011b jin\u00e1 tv\u00e1\u0159 Skotska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Queensferry je mal\u00e9 p\u0159\u00edmo\u0159sk\u00e9 m\u011bste\u010dko s barevn\u00fdmi domy, p\u0159\u00edstavem a v\u00fdhledy na v\u0161echny t\u0159i mosty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My jsme p\u0159ijeli v b\u0159eznu, tak\u017ee jsme tu m\u011bli hlavn\u011b klid a minimum turist\u016f. Mrzelo m\u011b jen jedno. Plavby za papuchalky za\u010d\u00ednaj\u00ed a\u017e pozd\u011bji na ja\u0159e, kdy sem p\u0159il\u00e9taj\u00ed hn\u00edzdit, tak\u017ee jsme je tentokr\u00e1t nevid\u011bli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dal\u0161\u00ed r\u00e1no jsme se na Grassmarket vr\u00e1tili, tentokr\u00e1t ale shora. Pro\u0161li jsme nen\u00e1padnou uli\u010dkou se schody The Vennel Viewpoint<\/strong>, odkud se p\u0159ed n\u00e1mi otev\u0159el neuv\u011b\u0159iteln\u00fd pohled na Edinburgh Castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bylo zaj\u00edmav\u00e9 vid\u011bt hrad zase z \u00fapln\u011b jin\u00e9 perspektivy. U\u017e jsme ho pro\u0161li, vid\u011bli z Grassmarketu i z Princes Street Gardens, ale pr\u00e1v\u011b tady mezi kamenn\u00fdmi schody a domy p\u016fsobil mo\u017en\u00e1 nejfotogeni\u010dt\u011bji.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Odtud jsme pokra\u010dovali do National Museum of Scotland<\/strong>. Obrovsk\u00e9ho muzea, kde si podle m\u011b ka\u017ed\u00fd najde n\u011bco sv\u00e9ho. Historie, p\u0159\u00edroda, v\u011bda, technologie i zn\u00e1m\u00e1 ovce Dolly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My jsme tu nakonec str\u00e1vili cel\u00e9 dopoledne a klidn\u011b bychom vydr\u017eeli je\u0161t\u011b d\u00e9le. Budova je kr\u00e1sn\u00e1 sama o sob\u011b a nav\u00edc se m\u016f\u017eete pod\u00edvat na st\u0159echu, odkud je n\u00e1dhern\u00fd v\u00fdhled na cel\u00fd Edinburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

V poledne jsme se vr\u00e1tili zp\u011bt do centra a pro\u0161li se po Royal Mile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je to hlavn\u00ed historick\u00e1 tepna Edinburghu, kter\u00e1 spojuje Edinburgh Castle s Palace of Holyroodhouse. Pro turisty je to samoz\u0159ejm\u011b jedno z nejvyhled\u00e1van\u011bj\u0161\u00edch m\u00edst ve m\u011bst\u011b, ale i tady se daj\u00ed objevit v\u011bci, kolem kter\u00fdch byste jinak jednodu\u0161e pro\u0161li.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

N\u00e1s nap\u0159\u00edklad m\u00edstn\u00ed Skot upozornil na nen\u00e1padnou cedulku p\u0159ipom\u00ednaj\u00edc\u00ed posledn\u00ed ve\u0159ejnou popravu v Edinburghu. Ta se zde konala v roce 1864 a odsouzen\u00fdm byl George Bryce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00edsto najdete na rohu Lawnmarket a George IV Bridge. Na zdi hledejte malou mosaznou desku a p\u0159\u00edmo pod n\u00ed jsou v dla\u017eb\u011b t\u0159i mosazn\u00e9 desti\u010dky ozna\u010duj\u00edc\u00ed m\u00edsto, kde kdysi st\u00e1la \u0161ibenice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bez upozorn\u011bn\u00ed bychom kolem n\u011bj pravd\u011bpodobn\u011b pro\u0161li, ani\u017e bychom si ho v\u0161imli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pr\u00e1v\u011b to m\u011b na Edinburghu bavilo. I na t\u011bch nejru\u0161n\u011bj\u0161\u00edch m\u00edstech se skr\u00fdvaj\u00ed p\u0159\u00edb\u011bhy, kter\u00e9 nejsou na prvn\u00ed pohled vid\u011bt.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Najednou jsme se ocitli mezi modern\u011bj\u0161\u00edmi budovami a p\u0159ed n\u00e1mi se objevila v\u00fdrazn\u00e1 stavba hotelu W Edinburgh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeho st\u0159echa je natolik zvl\u00e1\u0161tn\u00ed, \u017ee jsme si ji nejd\u0159\u00edve prohl\u00ed\u017eeli z d\u00e1lky a p\u0159em\u00fd\u0161leli, co to vlastn\u011b je.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\u017e pozd\u011bji jsme zjistili, \u017ee pr\u00e1v\u011b tato stavba pat\u0159\u00ed k nejv\u00fdrazn\u011bj\u0161\u00edm modern\u00edm dominant\u00e1m m\u011bsta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Na Calton Hill jsme vystoupali a\u017e pozd\u011b odpoledne. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A ud\u011blali jsme dob\u0159e. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slunce u\u017e pomalu zapadalo a p\u0159ed n\u00e1mi se otev\u0159el v\u00fdhled na cel\u00fd Edinburgh. Historick\u00e9 centrum, modern\u00ed budovy, mo\u0159e v d\u00e1lce a monumenty p\u0159ipom\u00ednaj\u00edc\u00ed antick\u00e9 stavby. Na chv\u00edli jsme se jen posadili a d\u00edvali se.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calton Hill pat\u0159\u00ed mezi m\u00edsta, kam se podle m\u011b vyplat\u00ed p\u0159ij\u00edt pr\u00e1v\u011b pozd\u011bji b\u011bhem dne. M\u00e1te \u010das nikam nesp\u011bchat a jen pozorovat m\u011bsto pod sebou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pr\u00e1v\u011b tady jsem si uv\u011bdomila, \u017ee Edinburgh nen\u00ed kr\u00e1sn\u00fd jen kv\u016fli sv\u00e9mu hradu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proto\u017ee Edinburgh jsme si u\u017eili bez pocitu, \u017ee mus\u00edme ka\u017ed\u00fd den od\u0161krtnout deset m\u00edst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Za \u010dty\u0159i dny jsme vid\u011bli hodn\u011b, ale rozhodn\u011b ne v\u0161echno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A vlastn\u011b je to dob\u0159e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Co se hod\u00ed v\u011bd\u011bt p\u0159ed cestou do Edinburghu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Edinburgh se d\u00e1 skv\u011ble pozn\u00e1vat p\u011b\u0161ky. My jsme v\u011bt\u0161inu m\u011bsta pro\u0161li pr\u00e1v\u011b takto a m\u00edstn\u00ed dopravu vyu\u017eili hlavn\u011b p\u0159i cest\u011b z leti\u0161t\u011b a mimo centrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinburgh jsme si u\u017eili po sv\u00e9m. Pro\u0161li jsme hrad, Royal Mile, Grassmarket, Calton Hill, muzeum a vydali se i k Forth Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A p\u0159esto m\u00e1m dnes pocit, \u017ee jsem v Edinburghu nechala je\u0161t\u011b spoustu p\u0159\u00edb\u011bh\u016f nedokon\u010den\u00fdch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u010cty\u0159i dny n\u00e1m sta\u010dily na to, abychom se do Edinburghu zamilovali. Nesta\u010dily ale na to, abychom ho poznali cel\u00fd.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mo\u017en\u00e1 pr\u00e1v\u011b proto je to m\u00edsto, kde bych s pozn\u00e1v\u00e1n\u00edm Skotska klidn\u011b za\u010dala znovu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
